Book Dragon

This whimsical dragon may not be reading the book he’s perched on. It is full of imaginary ancient runes. The art on the sides is reminiscent of an ancient language but doesn’t actually say anything (as far as I know).

I love reading fantasy novels. I read about 2 hours a day (not just fantasy, but definitely one of my favorite genres). I am not as much a fan of television and movies. My kids like the tv series, “How to Train Your Dragon” though.

I was reading the Kingdom of Landover series by Terry Brooks (again) when I started drawing this design. I spent way too long agonizing over the details and I am happy to finally get this one out into the world!

As with all of my patterns, you have the option of using the interlocking crochet technique or the overlay mosaic crochet technique. Each technique has its own file. And each file has written line-by-line instructions and a chart. The mosaic chart has X’s showing where to do your dropped double crochets.

As always, I am so grateful for my testers. My team for this pattern included anonymous, Angela, Heather Passmore, and Maja Serec.

The right side and wrong side of the interlocking crochet version will look like these samples by Heather Passmore and Maja Serec:

On the “right side” of the blanket, the dragon faces to the right. The first color used is the MC (Main Color) and I suggest black or darker than the other color.

When you use the overlay mosaic crochet technique you will cut your yarn at the end of each row and are always working from the “right side” / front. The back will just be striped.

The blanket fits nicely on a bed if you match gauge (using worsted weight yarn / 4 – medium) like these samples from Angela and Anonymous:

You can use any weight yarn and an appropriately sized hook and you will still get the image to show up – but your finished product will be smaller. Maja used thread and a 1.75 mm hook for hers!
